18th Century French Aubusson Mythological and Scenic Tapestry Composition
Decorate a wall or a staircase with this antique tapestry fragment. Almost square and hand woven in Aubusson, France, circa 1740, the colorful wall piece features a mythological scene set on a landscape embellished with draperies, people, trees, birds and old ruins. The center features an older wise man holding a walking stick, and teaching lessons to a young boy. The top is decorated with floral swags and dripping tassels. The old stone column on the right side features a pair of exotic ostriches, and foliage decor, which includes a tall palm tree that complements the landscape. Overall, the tapestry is in excellent condition commensurate with age. The composition flaunts rich colors in the beige, orange, blue, green and red palette.
