Large 19th Century Swiss Inlaid Walnut Cylinder Zither Music Box with 12 Songs
The elegant cabinet is made of walnut inlaid with tulipwood with a musical motif to the top. The hand-cranked works are enclosed in a glass case. This music box has a paper zither attachment and plays twelve 19th century American favorite tunes listed on a hand-lettered catalogue affixed to the inside of the lid. The ornate zither attachment covers more than half of the combs. The “zither” is a simple clap holder with a roll tube of stiff tissue paper affixed to its underside; when brought into contact with the musical comb, the result is a plinking banjo affect. The music instrument is in good working order, plays wonderful old popular European based tunes including Dixie Land, My Old Kentucky Home and Home Sweet Home. Paper label Symphonique, 30351.
