18th Century French Handwoven Aubusson Tapestry “La Chasse au Sanglier”

This antique tapestry was woven in Aubusson, France, circa 1760. Almost square in shape, the colorful wall decor depicts a hunting scene with a two noblemen on horseback chasing a wild boar with two dogs, embellished with trees, foliage, and a castle in the background. The pastoral and verdure tapestry is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with soft colors in the beige, green and blue palette, and has been recently backed with a heavy white canvas fabric. The illustrative tapestry would make an impressive addition to a large wall in a living room, entryway or staircase. Aubusson, a town on the river Creuse in central France, became a center of tapestry manufacture in the 17th and 18th centuries during the reigns of Louis XIV and Louis XV, Aubusson became the source for the aristocracy, hence the typically monumental sizes of Aubusson rugs and tapestries. Employing a method known as “warping” and executed on a low horizontal loom, the weavers of Aubusson were able to create an illusion of depth in their works. Aubusson textiles are also usually identified by their stylized framing motifs and neoclassical themes. Measures: 71″ W x 81″ H.
