About
Place this elegant antique bench at the foot of your bed, or use it for extra seating. Crafted in Provence, France circa 1780, and built of walnut, the fruit wood bench stands on six cabriole legs ending with hoof feet, and decorated with delicate floral motifs at the shoulder. The scalloped apron is decorated with carved shell and foliage motifs and the top is dressed with a hand woven Aubusson tapestry. The bench is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and adorns a rich walnut patina with wonderful tapestry colors in the blue, green and beige palette. Versatile, it could also be used in a hallway, or under a window in a living room. Aubusson, a town on the river Creuse in central France, became a center of tapestry manufacturing in the 17th and 18th centuries during the reigns of Louis XIV and Louis XV. Aubusson became the source for the aristocracy, hence the typically monumental sizes of Aubusson rugs and tapestries. Employing a method known as “warping” and executed on a low horizontal loom, the weavers of Aubusson were able to create an illusion of depth in their works. Aubusson textiles are also usually identified by their stylized framing motifs and neoclassical themes. 49″W x 16″D x 18″H
