18th Century Louis XV Carved Arched Cherry Armoire from Southwest France
This important and elegant antique armoire was crafted in southwest France, circa 1770. The tall fruit wood cabinet features a molded bonnet top and frieze with finely carved center basket of flowers. The piece adorns two large doors with raised panels decorated with carved flowering branches and ribbon-tied laurel wreaths. The inside reveals three removable shelves and the original lock and key mechanism with a museum quality forged iron and bronze cremaillere on the left door, which is in excellent working order. The bottom has a long drawer with iron pulls and escutcheon and a scalloped apron carved with a basket of flowers and foliage. The armoire stands on cabriole legs and escargot feet, and is in excellent condition with a rich cherry patina throughout. Measures: 58″ W x 25″ D x 96″ H.
