About
Add extra seating to a hallway, den or living room with this elegant antique bench with back and religious motifs. Crafted in northern Spain circa 1780, this sturdy fruit wood seating stands on carved turned legs decorated with acanthus leaves and ending with floral rosettes. The rectangular back with top finials is decorated with interesting carved medallions of floral and cross motifs, including the Jerusalem Cross on one side, and an outstretched forearm reaching to help over a cross on the other. The long and comfortable seat built with one single plank features carved edges. The large Baroque Gothic style seating is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and adorns a rich walnut patina with wonderful natural distress. The Jerusalem Cross has been a symbol of faith for centuries. Being one of the most recognizable emblems in the world, the Jerusalem cross has several interpretations. Some historians believe that the large cross represents Christ, while the four smaller crosses represent Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Measures :76.5″W x 18″D x 38″H.
