19th Century English Pastoral Oil on Canvas Painting Signed W. Hodges 1876
Set in the original carved gilt wood frame and painted in England circa 1876, according to the signature, this antique canvas depicts an industrious pastoral scene with a large group working in a hay field. At the forefront, a horse-drawn wagon containing two men taking a drink is steered by a man on the ground. Other smaller scenes dot the landscape–a mother in black and her dog feeding a child, two peasant women conversing, and 5 other farmers baling hay into another wagon from a large heap of freshly harvested hay. The grasses are full and yellow and the sky is bright blue and cloudy, representative of the joy of the arrival of harvest season. The artwork is full of exquisite details throughout the painting, and the blues, reds, and yellows are vibrant and bright. It is signed in the bottom right corner, “W. Hodges 1876”. The elegant artwork is set in ornate, hand-carved Louis XV gilt wood frame; the piece would bring a pastoral and familial peacefulness to any hallway, living room, kitchen.
