19th Century French Black Forest Carved Walnut Roaring Stag Sculpture
This tall and large antique deer sculpture was created in France, circa 1880. Hand carved in the style of French sculptor Prosper Lecourtier, the detailed walnut piece features a realistic and proud 12 pointer buck roaring at bay while standing on a rocky ground base. The large deer figure is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use and adorns a rich walnut patina. Place this fine composition on a man’s desk office, or in a study or a shelf in a den. A must for any ranch or hunting lodge! Prosper Lecourtier (1851-1924), was a French bronze sculptor. Very little is known about the personal life of this exceptional sculptor, but we do know that he studied under the famous bronze sculptor, Emmanuel Fremiet. Lecourtier is best known for his sculpture of farm animals like dogs and roosters, but his work encompasses all forms of animals including deer and boar, as well as equestrian groups.
