This fine bronze sculpture was sculpted in France, circa 1880 and is titled “Gloire et Fortune” (Glory and Fortune). The antique figure depicts a gentleman draped in cloth around his waist, his left hand inside a side purse hanging from an ornate belt, and his right hand raised. The young man is standing over corn husks, a compass, a Hammer and drapery inscribed “per laborem” (through labor). The sculpture is in excellent condition and has a beautiful patina. The work of art is stamped on the back “Paris Vrai Bronze Garanti.” and has very fine details throughout the composition. Emile Louis Picault (1833-1915) was a pupil of the painter Henri Royer. Between 1863 and 1914 he exhibited at the Salon in Paris. His bronze sculptures earned him major success. His oeuvre is characterized by allegorical or patriotic themes and figures of warriors and mythological heroes. In addition, he has also created busts of historical or literary figures, such as Joan of Arc, Voltaire or even Macbeth. Picault is considered one of the most prolific French sculptors of his time.
