19th Century French Bronze Silvered Catholic Monstrance with Cross & Shining Sun
Make an old world statement in your home with this important, antique “ostensoir,” or monstrance; crafted in France, circa 1860, this impressive religious relic rests on four paw feet and features a glowing sun shape with a cross at the top. Additional religious motifs include the shining sun, the wheat, the grape and the vine, and the lamb, symbol of gentleness, innocence and purity. Floral and foliage decor at the base the center of the cross has a small round brass door with glass, which symbolically holds the body of Christ for adoration. This important piece is carved from bronze with silver plate, and is in excellent condition with rich patina.
A monstrance is the vessel used in Roman Catholic, Old Catholic and Anglican churches to easily view objects of piety, such as the consecrated Eucharist host. Rituals in which the monstrance is used is during the Eucharist Adoration or the Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.
