19th Century French Butcher Block with Cow Head and Antique Meat Knives
This large antique “billot de boucher”, or butcher block was crafted in France, circa 1880. With an elaborate carved back, the piece stands on four fluted and spindled-shaped legs over a carved scalloped apron on all three sides and a large center drawer with the original bronze handle. The table top made of mixed woods including maple and beech wood, features a carving station surface shaped from generations of use, dovetails at each corner, and a knife holder slat on the right side. The back of later addition, has a arched top at the pediment; it is embellished with a cow head sculpture over a long iron mounted knife storage slat, decorated with three antique meat cleaver and chopper butcher knives with wood handles. The butcher table is in very good condition commensurate with age and use and has a rich light walnut patina.
