19th Century French Carved Butcher Block with Back and Meat Cleaver Knife Slot
This antique “billot de boucher”, or butcher block was crafted in southwest France, circa 1890. The piece stands on four fluted and spindled-shaped legs over a carved scalloped apron on all three sides and a large center drawer with the original iron handle across the front. The tabletop made of mixed woods including maple and beech wood, features a carving station surface shaped from generations of use, and embellished with decorative metal brackets at each corner. The original carved back decorated with a cow head sculpture is mounted in front of a iron knife storage slot. The butcher table is in very good condition commensurate with age and use and adorns a rich light walnut patina.
