About
This Gothic “Cathedre” (French for Cathedra or bishop’s throne) was crafted in southern France circa 1880. Built of oak, the chair stands on bracket feet over a straight plinth. The tall back is hand carved with pointed arch and tracery decor embellished at the pediment with Fleur-de-Lys finials and a carved monk head figure in the center. The bench seat with iron strap hinges lifts up with interior open storage, and is embellished with armrests on both sides. The large throne is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and adorns a rich dark patina; use it in a hallway, entry or on stair landing. Measures: 29″W x 20.5″D x 88.5″H.
