19th Century French Carved Polychrome and Gilt Terracotta Virgin Mary Statue
This beautiful, antique sculpture of the Virgin Mary was created in France, circa 1860. Embellished with luxurious gold leaf and polychrome finish, this Classic, religious figure is beautifully ornate. The figure sculpture has wonderful carved details throughout her robe, face, hair and hands. The Madonna carving is shown standing on a pedestal in the shape of a globe decorated with stars and a snake. The iconography visually implies that she is not only our Mother in heaven, but also Queen of the Earth and the entire universe.
The Madonna is shown crushing a snake under her foot. The serpent represents Satan who tries to hurt men and take them to Hell. The Virgin Mary is much more powerful than Satan and easily overpower him. Also as referenced in the book of Genesis (3:15); I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed: he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel”.
“I have given you power to tread on serpents and the power of the enemy”, we read in the Gospel of Luke 10: 19. Since Adam and Eve, the snake represents temptation and evil. The Virgin, crushing the serpent in triumph.
The traditional terracotta figure is in excellent condition and has a rich polychrome and gold leaf finish throughout.
