19th Century French Gilt Bronze Catholic Ostensoir Monstrance with Glowing Sun
Make a statement in your home with this intricate, antique gilt bronze “ostensoir,” otherwise known as a monstrance. Crafted in France, circa 1840, this impressive golden centrepiece sits on four paw feet and features intricate motifs including a cross at the pediment. Additional religious motifs include the shining sun with winged angels, the wheat, the vine, the tree of life, and floral decor at the base. The centre of the cross has a small round door with glass, which is intended to symbolically hold the body of Christ for adoration. This important, religious piece is in excellent condition and has a rich patinated finish.
A monstrance is the vessel used in Roman Catholic, Old Catholic and Anglican churches to easily view objects of piety, such as the consecrated Eucharist host. Rituals in which the monstrance is used is during the Eucharist Adoration or the Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.
