19th Century French Hand Carved Terracotta Olive Oil Jar from Provence

This large, antique earthenware jar was created in Southern France, circa 1870. Made of blond clay, the terracotta pot is round in shape with a tapered base and features three handles at the top; the olive jar is embellished with a brown beige glaze around the neck and rim with drippings, and has a natural beige tone throughout the body. Overall, this decorative vessel is in excellent condition with a rich aged patinated finish. In the south of France and especially in Biot (small village on the French Riviera), these olive pots also known as the “king of jars”, were used to transport olive oil in the 17th and 18th century. Measures: 20″ diameter 23.5″ height.
