19th Century French Louis XIII Carved Walnut Mutton Bone Foot Stool
This elegant antique double footrest was crafted in Southern France, circa 1870. The long stool stands on four curved “os de mouton” legs (or mutton bone), embellished with a carved central stretcher at the base. The seat is upholstered with a brown and beige velvet fabric decorated with Fleur-de-Lys motifs, and embellished with brass nail heads. The footrest is in excellent condition and has a rich walnut patina.
(Os de mouton: Refers to the sinuous stretchers that are the quintessential aspect of Louis XIII furniture. The shape of the chair legs is literally based on the legs of a lamb. Literally, “mutton bone.”)
