19th Century French Louis XV Carved Walnut Dough Box from Provence
This antique fruit wood “Petrin” (French for dough-box), was created in Avignon, France, circa 1870. Heavily carved from top to bottom, the dough box stands on four turned legs with scroll feet. The box features exquisite Provencal carvings including music instruments, floral and foliage decor. The tall cabinet’s top lifts up for inside storage. The piece is in excellent condition with rich walnut patina. Originally, the “Petrin” was used to make bread dough, then the bread was stored in a “Panetiere” (French for bread cabinet), which was usually hung over the dough box (See last picture) Measures: 40.5″ W x 20″ D x 36″ H.
