About
This elegant fruit wood armchair was crafted in France circa 1860. The “chauffeuse” chair, known as a fireside chair, is a low chair with high backrest, padded armrests and comfortable seat. It was originally used in the 19th century when the mother would breastfeed her newborn near the fireplace. This armchair features exquisite carvings including the traditional Louis XVI ribbon bow with finials at the top, three carved arrows pointing down in the middle, a shaped apron, and turned legs at the bottom. The chair’s armrests are upholstered with old “toile” vintage fabric in the traditional pink, red and beige colors and is embellished with decorative antique brass nail heads. The piece is in excellent condition with a rich walnut patina.
