19th Century French Renaissance Carved Walnut Halltree Bench and Umbrella Stand
This elegant “all in one” antique Gothic “Vestiaire” (coat rack, bench with inside storage, umbrella and cane holder) was crafted in Brittany France, circa 1870. The large cabinet stands on bun feet with open curved sides storage compartments in each corner. The back with a decorative cornice on top, is decorated with four double bronze hooks, a center beveled arched mirror embellished with small spindles; the back is further decorated with floral and leaf motifs throughout. The bottom is dressed with a bench seat decorated with carved armrests, and two panels depicting Briton people in traditional clothing; the top lifts up to reveal inside storage. The cabinet is also dressed with two rows of rings to hold umbrellas and keep canes in place. The tall and wide Renaissance style hall tree is in excellent condition with a rich walnut patina; useful and practical, it could be placed in an entry near the front door, a mud room or a den to catch extra clothing. Measures: 55″ W x 18″ D x 86.5″ H.
