About
This elegant antique, patinated metal sculpture was created in France, circa 1880. The detailed spelter piece features a realistic deer at bay standing on a black marble top. The large sculpture is signed on the front Lecourtier with a plaque on the side which reads: “Cerf Aux Abois, P. Lecourtier, medaille d’or” (deer at bay, Gold Medal). The animal figure is in excellent condition, with a rich patinated gilt finish. Place this fine composition on a desk in a study or on a shelf in a den.
Prosper Lecourtier (1851-1924), was a French bronze sculptor. Very little is known about the personal life of this exceptional sculptor, but we do know that he studied under the famous bronze sculptor, Emmanuel Fremiet. Lecourtier is best known for his sculpture of farm animals like dogs and roosters, but his work encompasses all forms of animals, as well as equestrian groups.
