Early 20th Century Oil on Canvas Sheep Painting in Gilt Frame Signed Desvarreux
Set in the original carved giltwood frame, this charming, antique oil on canvas was painted in France, circa 1910. The composition depicts a group of sheep entering a barn, with chicken and dog looking on. The painting shows the artist’s masterful use of dimension, color and texture. The piece is signed in the lower right corner by the artist, R. Desvarreux. The painting is in excellent condition with wonderful details and rich colors. Raymond Desvarreux (1876-1961) was the son of the American painter James Desvarreux-Larpenteur. He was a pupil of Jean-Léon Gérôme and Jean Baptiste Detaille. He painted landscapes, horses, sheep and hunting scenes like his father, and had exhibits at the Paris salon. Listed in the Benezit. Measures: 29.75″ W x 26.5″ H.
