Exceptional 19th Century French Carved Oak Bench with Storage Trapdoor
Compliment your entryway or mud room with this heavily carved Louis XIII bench from France, circa 1870 ideal to store extra blankets, rain boots or other objects, the antique bench features exquisite carvings which took years to chisel. The back has three inside tavern scenes panels in the manner of Teniers with gentlemen drinking, smoking and laughing. The armrests have hand carved lions sited on their front paws. The seat has a trapdoor, revealing an inside storage area. The bottom front panels are carved with lion heads and foliage carved in high relief, and the feet are carved as feline paws. The bench is in excellent condition with a light walnut patinated finish.
