$9,800
About
This elegant antique console table with bow front and curved sides was crafted in France, circa 1840. The fruit wood chest stands on four cabriole legs with carved sabot feet, and is decorated at the knees with stylized foliate decor. Ornamented with a Louis XIV style scallop-shell on the apron, the console chest has a pair of large drawers with bronze handles. The scallop shell is a medieval pilgrimage symbol used to mark the way of travelers to the site of Santiago de Compostela in Spain. It became a popular decorative element under Louis XIV and its use was continued through several other stylistic periods. The piece is in excellent condition and has detailed carvings and a rich walnut patina throughout. Use this sideboard against a wall or as a sofa table.
