Mid-19th Century French Louis XV Carved Chestnut Wall Mounted Shield Sculpture
This beautiful, antique crest was crafted in southwest France, circa 1850. The large fruit wood coat of arms is heavily carved with a shell motif cartouche at the pediment supporting a crown. Both sides feature intricate carvings including scroll decor with foliage. The center has a large oval carved medallion surrounded by decorative shell motifs. The bottom features a lamb sculpture and a dove coming down from Heaven, representing the Holy Spirit. (Ref Luke 3:21-22; “And as he was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven; “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I well pleased”). The elegant wall mount sculpture is in excellent condition with a rich walnut patina, and would make a strong statement hung over a mantle.
