Mid-19th Century French Wrought Iron Book Binding Press on Oak Stand from Lyon
This antique paper binding press was forged in Lyon France, circa 1870. The Classic “Presse a Relier” made of solid iron is almost square in shape stands on a carved oak base, and features scrolled decor on the facade; the sides are connected to the manual screw controlled by a wide top handle. This heavy tool is in excellent, and adorns a rich patinated black painted finish with gilt accents. Decorate a shelf with this wonderful accessory in a study or library! In the old days, this kind of device was used to press together the book’s sheets together before receiving a bookbinding. Bronze plaque on the front that reads: “Papeterie L. Marechal, Lyon”.
