Mid-20th Century Set of Eight French Louis XIII Carved Sheep Bone Dining Chairs
This elegant set of eight side chairs was crafted in France, circa 1950. Each chair has an arched back and four carved “os de mouton” legs (or sheep bone). The chairs are upholstered with their original beige, red and rust geometric pattern fabric, and are further embellished with decorative nailheads. The traditional chairs are in excellent condition and have a rich walnut patina throughout the frame.
Os de mouton: This term refers to the Classic, sinuous stretchers that are a quintessential element of Louis XIII furniture. The shape of the chair legs is inspired by the shape of the legs of a lamb. The term is translated literally as “mutton bone.”
