Pair of 18th Century Flemish Portiere Tapestries with Mythological Figures
Called portieres, these antique wall hanging tapestries were hand woven in Belgium, circa 1760. They both feature mythological and lion figures flanked by foliage decor in the blue and green palette. Both pieces have a beige border with geometric design and a new canvas backing for protection. The tapestries are in excellent condition with soft colors.
Portiere tapestries are tall slim wall-hangings which hung on either side of elegant doors of French chateaux and palaces in past centuries; they are unique in that they are designed to fill narrow wall spaces. Hang this pair of tapestries on both sides of a window, a door, or even a mantel.
