Crafted in southern Italy circa 1920, this large and colorful pair of antique heraldic wall plaques features elaborate Baroque-style decoration inspired by European aristocratic coats of arms. Each carved wooden panel has a distinctive bombé silhouette with deeply scrolled and scalloped edges, creating a dramatic three-dimensional effect.

The central shields display striking heraldic compositions combining black and white diagonal stripes, red fleurs-de-lis on a cream background, and golden lions rampant symbolizing courage, strength, and nobility. One shield is further embellished with a black double-headed eagle, traditionally associated with imperial authority. Beneath each central coat of arms are two smaller circular escutcheons featuring additional colorful emblems, possibly representing family alliances or ancestral lineages.

The shields are surrounded by elaborate trompe-l’œil Baroque cartouches, beautifully painted in soft gray and blue tones with scrolling acanthus leaves, volutes, and ornamental flourishes. The contrasting red, black, cream, and gold heraldic motifs create a rich decorative effect against the muted background.

The fleur-de-lis, prominently featured throughout both compositions, has long been associated with French royalty, European heraldry, and Catholic symbolism.
