Early 20th Century French Hand-Painted Henriot Quimper Oval Faïence Wall Plaque

About
This colorful antique ceramic wall plaque was crafted in Brittany, France, circa 1904–1922. Oval in shape and made of tin-glazed faïence, the decorative panel is hand-painted with a vibrant pastoral scene depicting a traditional Breton couple dancing in regional costume—his raised arm leading the motion while she follows with elegance and poise. The couple’s lively expressions and flowing garments capture the spirit of provincial life in early 20th-century France. Surrounding the central scene, a deep cobalt blue border features scrolling floral and star motifs in relief. The top is adorned with the heraldic crest of Quimper: two gilded lions flanking a crowned shield bearing a central sheep, referencing the town’s historic identity. The reverse bears the “HR” maker’s mark for Henriot Quimper, one of the region’s most celebrated faïence workshops. Quimper pottery boasts a long and storied legacy, with hand-painted ceramics produced since the late 17th century. Henriot was founded in 1778 and became known for its charming depictions of Breton peasants, maritime scenes, and floral designs. In excellent condition commensurate with age, this antique wall plate is a delightful accent for a country kitchen, dining room, or French provincial interior. 12″W x 17″H
