Mid-Century French Louis XV Walnut Estanier with Carved Basket and Urn Motifs
$1,500
About
Crafted in Provence, France circa 1950, this mid-century “Etagère” or “Estanier” is inspired by the Louis XV style and made of richly grained walnut. Traditionally used to display “Etains” (pewterware in English), the piece now serves beautifully in a powder room, breakfast nook, or hallway as a decorative wall-mounted shelf. The high, scalloped crest features a deeply carved basket of flowers flanked by foliate sprays, with turned finials at the pediment and on each corner adding vertical elegance. Two fixed shelves are framed by curving sides and further embellished with hand-carved motifs: a shell and laurel spray on the middle apron and the stylized traditional Provencal urn in the center surrounded by foliage at the base. Cabriole legs and escargot feet complete the silhouette, showcasing the artisan’s attention to form and proportion. The warm walnut patinated finish retains a soft satin sheen, enhancing the sculptural carvings and timeworn charm. Metal hanging hooks are affixed at the back for easy wall display. Dimensions: 25″ W x 11″ D x 53″ H Excellent vintage condition consistent with age and use.
