French Educational Atlas Geographique Puzzle Box with Maps, Dated 1903

About
This early 20th century French educational game is presented in its original decorative box, titled Atlas Géographique. Printed in Paris by Imprimerie Dufrénoy and dated 5–03 (May 1903), the set was designed to teach geography through engaging puzzle maps. The lithographed cover features an allegorical female figure of Geography, seated before a globe, surrounded by scenes of industry, exploration, and nature—an artistic reflection of France’s Belle Époque fascination with progress and world knowledge. The box opens to reveal four finely detailed jigsaw puzzles, each mounted on wooden boards and framed with gilt edges. The maps include a Planisphère sur la projection de Mercator, Europe Politique, and France par Départements, along with an additional continental map. Each puzzle is composed of precisely cut interlocking pieces, retaining vibrant pastel coloring with careful labeling of political boundaries, seas, and cities. Excellent condition, with gentle wear and toning consistent with over a century of age and use. All puzzles remain intact with their original boards and box. Measuring 14.25″ wide by 10.75″ deep and 2″ high, this compact yet highly detailed atlas puzzle set reflects the enduring value of French antique educational objects. An exceptional collector’s piece, equally suited for display in a library or study, or as a conversation-worthy decorative accessory that embodies the intersection of education, cartography, and Belle Époque artistry.
