Crafted in Switzerland circa 1880, this large bronze cow bell is a fine example of Alpine pastoral tradition. The bell is signed Barinotto, Chiantra & Cie, Fondeurs à La Chaux-de-Fonds, a foundry renowned in the 19th century for its quality bronze casting. The surface is decorated with embossed motifs, including a Swiss shield with cross and a stylized heraldic emblem, lending both regional identity and charm. These bells were more than ornamental, each herd was fitted with bells of varying tones, allowing owners and shepherds to identify and locate their cattle or sheep across vast mountain pastures. The distinctive resonance of each bell meant a herd could be recognized from a great distance. This example retains its original forged iron buckle and thick hand-stitched leather strap, weathered to a rich patina from age and use. Measuring 20″ high with strap and 7.75″ in diameter, the bell still houses its iron clapper, producing a deep, sonorous tone. A true relic of rural Swiss heritage, this antique bell embodies both function and craftsmanship. Today, it makes a striking decorative accent for a country home, mountain lodge, or collection of Alpine artifacts.
