Mid-19th C. French Louis Philippe Metamorphic High Chair with Engraved Décor
$1,200
About
A rare and multifunctional French metamorphic high chair in the Louis Philippe style, crafted circa 1860 from solid fruitwood and walnut, both displaying a warm, timeworn patina. Ingeniously designed to convert from a tall feeding chair into a low rolling pram or play chair, this 19th-century nursery piece exemplifies both elegance and practicality. The chair features a shaped crest rail, turned spindle supports, and an arched backrest panel finely engraved with a playful harlequin clown figure. The tray is etched with charming animal motifs including two kittens playing with a fish in a bow, while the seat is adorned with a delicate floral and butterfly design. When converted to its lower position, the piece transforms into a wheeled play seat with a wide table surface depicting a dog swimming after ducks; the table is further accented with a row of original painted wooden abacus beads. It rests on small iron-rimmed wheels and includes a bentwood footrest, adding both charm and functionality. A delightful and functional collectible for any nursery vignette or antique toy collection. Excellent condition with minor surface wear and rich patina consistent with age and use. Dimensions (high chair position): 18″ W x 18″ D x 38″ H Seat height (high position): 24″ Dimensions (low pram position): 31″ W x 18″ D x 24″ H Seat height (low position): 10″
