18th C. Spanish Baroque Iron-Clad Trunk with Bombe Top on Barley Twist Base
$1,600
About
This striking two-piece coffer was crafted in Spain circa 1770 and exemplifies the bold, ornamental style of the Spanish Baroque period. The trunk features a bombe-shaped lid and is clad in hand-tooled iron panels intricately embossed with scrolling foliate motifs. Forged iron strapping and stylized escutcheons provide both structural integrity and decorative flourish, reflecting its original purpose as a secure valuables chest. Raised on a later custom base with turned barley twist legs and molded stretchers, the piece gains height and presence, making it ideal for functional use in today’s interiors. The interior reveals a pinewood carcass with a beautifully aged patina and visible tool marks, testifying to its centuries-old construction. Measuring 26 inches wide by 14 inches deep and 27 inches high overall, this antique trunk offers both storage and sculptural appeal, perfect for an entryway, bedroom, or study. Very good condition commensurate with age and use, with wear and oxidation that enhance its timeworn charm.
