Pair of 19th Century French Barbizon Style Pendant Paintings Signed Baratte
$1,800
About
This refined pair of antique French pendant landscape paintings, executed circa 1870, is painted in oil on wood panel and presented in their original carved giltwood frames. Conceived as true companion pieces, the two compositions balance one another beautifully, one depicting a tranquil riverside path shaded by tall trees, the other featuring a rustic cottage nestled within an open countryside setting. Together they create a harmonious rural narrative typical of late 19th century French decorative painting. Both works are signed Baratte in the lower corner, and the reverse of one panel bears the inscription “Huile sur bois – XIXe s. (signé Baratte)”, confirming the medium and 19th century origin. The soft atmospheric skies, earthy tonal palette, and delicate staffage figures reflect the influence of the Barbizon School, emphasizing mood, natural light, and pastoral serenity. The substantial carved gilt frames feature molded and foliate detailing and retain a warm aged finish that complements the tonal depth of the paintings. Both works are in excellent condition commensurate with age and use and retain a rich antique character. Dimensions: 13.5″W x 20.5″H (each)
