19th Century French Cast Iron Heraldic Wall Hanging Shield Plaque
$1,500
About
Crafted in France circa 1870, this antique heraldic wall shield is cast in solid iron and modeled in high relief with a sporting coat of arms. The arched plaque is centered by a medallion filled with cross motifs, framed by scrolling foliage, and backed by crossed rifles tied with ribbon, a clear reference to the chasse and country-estate tradition. A crown motif anchors the lower register, giving the composition a formal, armorial finish consistent with the medieval revival taste of late 19th century France. The crisp casting and dimensional depth create dramatic shadow and movement when mounted. The surface retains a rich, dark brown patina with natural age variation, while the reverse shows honest oxidation consistent with its age. Two original mounting holes remain for secure installation. Because of its substantial cast iron construction, this antique French shield can also be mounted as a striking decorative accent behind a range or incorporated into a rustic kitchen or wine cellar. Excellent antique condition commensurate with age and use. Dimensions: 17.5″W x 0.5″D x 19.75″H
