19th Century French Louis Philippe Giltwood Mantel Mirror with Carved Crest
$3,800
About
Circa 1870, this elegant antique French giltwood mantel mirror is designed in the Louis Philippe taste, featuring a gracefully shaped rectangular frame surmounted by an elaborate Rococo-style crest. The finely carved crest centers on a scallop shell surrounded by scrolling acanthus, floral sprays, and flowing foliate elements. The broad molded frame is further decorated with delicate floral engraved motifs across the gilt surface, adding refinement and subtle texture to the design. An inner beaded border neatly frames the mirror plate, while the original water-gilded finish retains a warm, mellow gold tone with attractive variations in patina that highlight the depth of the carving and engraving. The mirror retains its original mercury glass plate with beveled edge, softly reflecting light and displaying light age spotting consistent with its 19th century origin. Standing over five feet tall, the mirror has an impressive vertical presence, making it particularly well suited as a mantel mirror, though it would also display beautifully above a console, commode, or in an entryway. The reverse reveals traditional wood plank construction consistent with 19th century craftsmanship and retains its original mounting hardware. The mirror remains in excellent condition commensurate with age and use. Dimensions: 38.5″W x 5″D x 61.5″H.
