Pair of 19th Century Provençal Terracotta Glazed Olive Oil Jars
$1,800
About
This authentic pair of antique French olive oil jars was crafted in Provence circa 1880 and exemplifies the robust vernacular pottery traditionally used for oil storage in southern France. Hand-thrown in coarse terracotta, each jar features a rounded, bulbous body topped with a thick rolled rim, offering both durability and visual weight. The surfaces are finished with expressive dripped glazes in shades of olive green, ochre yellow, and deep brown, applied at the shoulder and cascading naturally over the body, a hallmark of Provençal utilitarian ceramics.
Both vessels retain their original drainage holes at the base, a functional detail associated with cellar storage and traditional use. The natural clay bodies show areas of exposed terracotta with time-softened wear, mineral deposits, and patina consistent with age and long-term use, enhancing their authentic antique character.
Decorative yet grounded, these antique jars are ideal for flanking an entry, anchoring a fireplace hearth, styling a wine cellar, or adding Provençal texture to both interior and covered outdoor spaces.
