19th Century French Louis XIII Walnut Coffee Table with Marble Inlay Top
$7,900
About
Bring a sophisticated Old World accent to a seating area or library with this elegant antique coffee table crafted in southern France circa 1860. Built of richly patinated walnut in the Louis XIII taste, the rectangular table stands on six finely turned legs over square block supports embellished with carved roundel motifs and joined by a substantial stretcher base with geometric molded decoration.
The striking top is dressed with an inset black marble surface intricately inlaid with colorful stone marquetry depicting scattered playing cards, drafting instruments, ropes, and a central maritime scene with sailing boats and figures along the shoreline. The whimsical composition evokes the decorative trompe l’oeil tabletops popular in 19th century European craftsmanship and gives the table an unmistakably artistic presence. The variegated marble border with warm rouge and ochre tones further enhances the refined presentation.
The antique cocktail table is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and adorns a rich walnut patina with beautiful depth and warmth. The marble top displays desirable age character with minor surface wear consistent with use and age. A remarkable statement piece equally suited for a traditional interior, study, or curated eclectic space.
