18th Century French Aubusson Verdure Tapestry with Château Landscape
$12,000
About
This exceptional antique French Aubusson tapestry was handwoven circa 1780 and presents a romantic verdure landscape centered by a château, river, bridge, trees, exotic birds, sheep, and a reclining shepherd figure in the foreground. The composition is beautifully balanced, with architectural ruins and village structures set within lush foliage, creating the pastoral elegance associated with fine 18th Century French tapestry work.
Woven in a soft palette of muted blues, greens, taupe, ivory, and warm brown tones, the tapestry has a wonderfully timeworn surface and decorative presence. The leafy canopy, birds perched among the branches, grazing animals, and water scene give the piece strong visual depth while retaining the faded, atmospheric quality collectors seek in antique Aubusson textiles. The lower scene with sheep and shepherd adds narrative charm and makes the tapestry especially desirable for a living room, dining room, library, stair landing, or large entry wall.
The tapestry is backed with linen and finished with a later fabric border for stability and presentation. Wear, fading, losses, and age-related separations are present throughout, consistent with age and use, and add to its authentic 18th Century character.
