Rich in architectural detail and ceremonial atmosphere, this large antique oil painting depicts the Corpus Christi procession passing through the heart of Seville, Spain. Crafted circa 1850, the work is by French artist Octave Prost, known as Baron Prost (1797–1878), and is signed “Bon Oct. Prost” in the lower left corner. Titled ” La Procession du Corpus Christi traversant la Plaza Real à Séville “, the composition presents a densely populated religious procession moving across Seville’s Plaza Real. Clergy in elaborate vestments, processional crosses, banners, standards, and ceremonial structures fill the foreground, while spectators line the street and watch from the balconies above. Rising beyond the crowd, the Giralda and the monumental façade of Seville Cathedral establish the setting with impressive architectural precision and create a strong sense of depth. Baron Prost was a 19th-century French painter whose work reflects the era’s fascination with travel, historic architecture, religious ceremony, and picturesque Mediterranean subjects. Here, the carefully observed figures, richly colored vestments, banners, and detailed urban setting combine narrative interest with a distinctly documentary quality. The canvas displays fine craquelure consistent with age and is housed in an important substantial carved giltwood frame with bold Rococo Revival foliate scrollwork, floral ornamentation, and beaded inner molding.
