19th Century French Louis Philippe Walnut Metamorphic High Chair and Pram
$261
About
A remarkable example of 19th-century ingenuity, this antique French metamorphic high chair transforms from traditional elevated seating into a low rolling nursery chair with an extended play table. Crafted in France circa 1860, the versatile piece is built of walnut in the Louis Philippe style, featuring beautifully turned spindle supports, rounded finials, and a rich, warm patina.
In its upright position, the chair features an arched spindle back, a solid wooden seat, and a removable front tray supported by turned wooden arms. The tall frame rests on splayed legs with a lower wooden foot platform, providing a practical seating arrangement for a young child.
The ingenious hinged construction allows the chair to convert into a rolling pram or play chair. When lowered, the extended wooden tray becomes a play surface, decorated with a rectangular illustration and fitted with two rows of colorful wooden abacus beads for counting and entertainment. Four small black iron wheels, turned stretchers, and the original mechanical fittings further enhance its unusual design.
The antique child’s chair is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, retaining a beautiful walnut patina with appropriate surface wear. Both decorative and functional in design, this unusual piece offers a fascinating glimpse into French nursery furniture of the 19th century.
