A distinctive example of French Renaissance Revival craftsmanship, this antique barrel armchair features richly carved details and an unusual rounded silhouette. Crafted in France circa 1880, the chair is built of solid oak and features a gracefully curved horseshoe-shaped backrest that extends into sweeping arms, each supported by an upright decorated with a finely carved lion head. The expressive feline faces, with open mouths and detailed manes, add a bold sculptural element to the design.

The open back is further embellished with a pierced central splat featuring scrolling foliage, volutes, and a carved shell motif. The wide, rounded seat is fitted with natural cane, providing a pleasing contrast to the warm wood finish. Below, the chair stands on four turned barley-twist legs joined by a shaped X-form stretcher centered with a decorative finial.

The antique armchair is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and retains a rich, warm brown oak patina with subtle variations that highlight the carved details. Combining the architectural influence of the Renaissance with the decorative character of the late 19th century, this unusual barrel chair would make a wonderful accent in a library, study, or traditional living room.
