About
This elegant 18th-century bronze bust of Marie Antoinette was sculpted in Paris circa 1790 and signed on the back by the French sculptor Félix Lecomte (1737-1817). The finely cast and chased figure depicts the queen with her characteristic coiffure adorned with roses and flowers, dressed in a robe decorated with multiple Fleur-de-Lys and a medallion bearing the profile of King Louis XVI. The expressive modeling of her features and the refined drapery exemplify the sculptural grace of late-Louis XVI neoclassical art.
Félix Lecomte, a pupil of Falconet and Antoine Vassé, earned the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1758 and became a member of the Académie Royale in 1771. His most celebrated work, a marble group of Œdipe et Phorbas, secured his position as “Professeur” at the Academy. His famous bust of Marie Antoinette once graced the queen’s bedroom at the Château de Versailles.
This period bronze is in excellent condition, with a warm, rich patinated surface and exceptional detail in both texture and finish. A superb collectible for any connoisseur of French royal art or neoclassical sculpture.
