Late 19th Century French Carved Wood Silvered Carousel Horse Sculpture
$3,950
About
This striking antique carousel horse was crafted in France circa 1880 and captures the theatrical spirit of the Belle Époque fairground. Hand carved from wood, the horse is modeled in a dramatic rearing pose with its forelegs raised and hind legs extended, creating a strong sense of movement and energy. The figure is mounted on an oval plinth with a vertical support pole, preserving the appearance of its original carousel presentation.
The carving is particularly expressive throughout, from the alert ears and open mouth to the defined musculature, flowing mane, and deeply modeled tail. The horse is fitted with a carved bridle, saddle, breast collar, and decorative tack, all integrated into the sculpted surface. Its aged silvered finish has mellowed beautifully, revealing warm undertones and areas of natural wear that give the piece depth and authentic antique character.
The large scale and animated silhouette make this an especially decorative sculptural object, equally suited to a library, game room, entry hall, ranch interior, or sophisticated commercial setting. Viewed from either side, the horse has excellent presence and remains visually engaging from every angle.
The sculpture is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with a rich, time-worn silvered patina throughout.
