18th C. French Weathered Carved Limestone Two-Piece Garden Urn and Pedestal
$2,900
About
This striking two-piece garden urn was hand-carved in France circa 1780 from solid limestone and displays an extraordinary weathered surface with moss traces and lichen accumulation that speak to centuries of outdoor use. The bowl is encircled with a procession of robed figures in high relief, each bearing a distinct posture and object, possibly representing saints or scholars, adding a sacred or monastic sensibility to the piece. The urn sits atop its original square pedestal, also limestone, adorned with stylized lion-like or grotesque heads around a molded plinth. A large central drainage hole runs through the basin and pedestal, confirming its original function as an outdoor garden vessel. The two components align perfectly, forming a unified and architecturally balanced composition. Measuring 22 inches in diameter and 20.5 inches high when assembled, the piece has strong sculptural presence without overwhelming scale. The surface bears natural aging with softened edges, pitting, and embedded organic growth, all contributing to its authentic antique charm. A rare and evocative decorative object, ideal for a garden, entryway, or contemplative outdoor setting. Good condition commensurate with age and exposure. A few hairline cracks throughout.
