18th Century French Louis XV Walnut “Commode Tombeau” from Bordeaux
$6,800
About
Crafted in Bordeaux, France circa 1760, this elegant antique “Commode Tombeau” exemplifies the graceful movement and refined craftsmanship associated with the Louis XV period. Built of richly grained walnut, the bombe-form chest showcases beautifully shaped serpentine sides, a molded top with softened corners, and three reverse-curved drawers across the façade. The scalloped apron and carved escargot feet further emphasize the fluid silhouette characteristic of fine Bordelaise furniture.
The commode retains its original ornate bronze pulls and escutcheons, each richly cast with Rococo-inspired foliate motifs that complement the sculptural lines of the case. Subtle recessed panel details along the sides add depth and refinement, while the warm walnut surface displays beautiful figuring and a deep, time-softened patina developed over centuries of use.
The chest is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with minor wear consistent with its 18th century origins. A timeless and versatile piece, equally suited for use in a bedroom, entryway, or living room.
