This handsome antique commode tombeau was crafted in Bordeaux circa 1760 and displays the sculptural proportions associated with 18th-century Bordelaise furniture. Built of richly grained walnut, the chest features a pronounced bombe profile, softly rounded corners, and elegantly shaped sides that give the case its distinctive tomb-like silhouette.

The façade is fitted with two large full-width drawers beneath a divided upper tier of two smaller drawers, providing generous storage while maintaining a balanced composition. Each drawer retains ornate bronze pulls and escutcheons decorated with scrolling Rococo foliage. A molded walnut top follows the curving outline of the case, while the scalloped apron flows into short cabriole legs ending in carved escargot feet.

Recessed molded panels enrich the sides, and the warm walnut has developed a deep, mellow patina that highlights the grain and hand-built character of the piece.

An excellent example of provincial French Louis XV cabinetmaking, this commode offers both strong decorative presence and practical storage for a bedroom, entryway, or living room.

Excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with expected wear and surface variations.
