18th Century French Louis XV Carved Walnut “Oratory” Two-Door Cabinet from Lyon
$2,400
About
Place this elegant antique “Oratoire” in an entry or bedroom for a refined devotional accent. Handcrafted in Lyon, France circa 1780, this Louis XV-period fruitwood cabinet was designed as a private Arma Christi prayer station. The oratory features a slanted lectern-style top with a hinged front, traditionally used for reading sacred texts such as a Bible or missal. Lifting the top reveals a concealed compartment for storing rosaries, devotional items, or religious volumes. Below, a single paneled door with molded and arched detailing opens to interior shelving for additional storage. The cabinet stands on classic escargot feet and is finished with a shaped scalloped apron, both hallmarks of Provincial craftsmanship from the period. It retains its original crémaillère locking system, an early iron bolt mechanism that underscores the authenticity of its liturgical purpose. The walnut surface boasts a warm, aged patina and is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use. A soulful and distinctive oratory piece from Lyon, ideal for traditional interiors or as a spiritual accent in a personal retreat.
