18th Century French Louis XV Carved Walnut Wedding Armoire from Provence
$16,000
About
This exceptional antique “Armoire Provençale” was crafted in southern France circa 1760. Built of richly figured walnut, the tall cabinet showcases the elegance and romance associated with traditional French wedding armoires, created as treasured family heirlooms and often given as part of a marriage dowry. The facade is decorated with finely hand carved floral and foliate motifs framed by elegant molded panels, while the shaped bonnet crown is centered with an exquisite sculptural crest featuring a pair of doves flanking a nest with birds among oak leaves and acorns, symbols of love, fidelity, and prosperity.
The cabinet stands on escargot feet over a deeply scalloped apron embellished with a pierced lyre and flowering branches in high relief. The tall double doors retain their original forged iron espagnole locking mechanism with interior cremaillère, oversized iron lock, and working key, all remarkable survivals from the 18th century. Additional refinements include long pierced iron escutcheons, fluted corner mounts, and beautifully molded door panels characteristic of Provençal craftsmanship.
When opened, the interior reveals its original fitted shelving and three drawers, offering excellent storage versatility for linens, clothing, or household items. The armoire remains in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and adorns a warm and rich walnut patina throughout. A true statement piece with museum-quality presence, ideal for a bedroom, entryway, or grand French country interior.
